Two(or more)-Time Nippon Series MVP Award Winners

After Corey Seager of the Texas Rangers won his second World Series MVP award last week, George Bennett did one of his "Carpet o’ Cards" tweets showing all four players who were two-time World Series MVP Award winners.  He showed cards from each player from the years they won the award.  For example in Seager's case he showed his 2020 and 2023 Topps cards.

I was inspired by this tweet to do a post about all the players who have won multiple Nippon Series MVP awards so I did a little research.  There have been seven such players in all, including one player who won four(!) awards.  I wanted to show cards from each year a player won an award but that proved difficult for some of the players.  What I settled for was showing a card from at least one of the years he won the award OR a card commemorating the award OR (best case) a card from the year he won the award that commemorates the winning of the award.  When I can, I'll show multiple cards for the player.  So here we go in chronological order...

Takehiko Bessho, 1952 and 1956:

1952 Yamakatsu JBR 28

Shigeo Nagashima, 1963, 1965, 1969 and 1970:

2014 Epoch Shigeo Nagashima National Treasures #06

Tsuneo Horiuchi, 1972 and 1973:

Circa 1972 JCM 15a

Kimiyasu Kudoh, 1986 and 1987:

2011 BBM Kimiyasu Kudoh "Never Give Up" #04

2011 BBM Kimiyasu Kudoh "Never Give Up" #06

Koji Akiyama, 1991 and 1999:

1991 BBM Nippon Series #S58

1999 BBM Nippon Series #S64

Atsuya Furuta, 1997 and 2001:

1997 BBM Nippon Series #S58

2001 BBM Nippon Series #S58

Toshiaki Imae, 2005 and 2010:

2005 BBM Nippon Series #55

2010 BBM Nippon Series #S66

A couple notes:  The Nagashima card commemorates him winning the 1963 Series MVP.  Koji Akiyama is the only player to win the award for two different teams.  All seven players went on to be managers (Toshiaki Imae was just named manager of the Eagles a few weeks ago) but only Nagashima, Akiyama and Kimiyasu Kudoh managed a Nippon Series champion team.

I want to add Hideki Matsui as an honorable mention to both Series MVP lists.  Matsui is the only player to ever win an MVP award for both the Nippon Series (2000) AND the World Series (2009):

2000 BBM Nippon Series #S60
