Oldest BBM Set With An Active NPB Player - 2026 Edition

Time for another one of my Opening Day traditions - which is the oldest BBM flagship set to have a currently active NPB player (where "active" is a very relative term)?  For the second year in a row, the oldest set is the 2002 one.  All three 2002 rookies who were active last year - Takumi Kuriyama, Takeya Nakamura and Masanori Ishikawa - are on NPB rosters again this year.  Kuriyama and Nakamura are each 43 while Ishikawa is 46.  All three have spent their entire careers with the same teams that took them in the 2001 NPB draft.  Here are their cards from the 2002 BBM 1st and 2nd Version sets (only Ishikawa appeared in both sets):

2002 BBM 1st Version #269

2002 BBM 1st Version #268

2002 BBM 1st Version #24

2002 BBM 2nd Version #442

I, of course, need to mention that there's one former NPB player who's still active in one of Japan's independent leagues.  44 year old Munenori Kawasaki will be suiting up for his seventh season with the Tochigi Golden Braves of the independent Baseball Challenge League.   Kawasaki was drafted by the then-Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in 1999 so his rookie card is in the 2000 BBM set:

2000 BBM #291

1994-95 BBM All Star MVP Inserts

BBM issued an annual All Star set in conjunction with NPB's All Star series each year from 1991 to 2012.  When I was first learning about Japanese baseball, these box sets were a pretty good way to get some idea who the better players were in NPB (with the usual caveats about All Star game rosters) although as I learned more, the sets got less useful.

One of the standard parts of the sets when I started getting them (in 2001) were cards that commemorated the previous year's All Star MVPs.  I discovered, though, that the first couple All Star sets BBM put out did not have these cards.  It wasn't until the fourth edition, in 1994, that BBM added these cards.  What was kind of odd about the 1994 set was that BBM decided to play catchup.  Not only would the set have the MVPs for the 1993 All Star games, it would also have the MVPs for the 1991 and 1992 games.

Actually, I'm not being entirely accurate.  Unlike later editions of the set, the 1994 BBM All Star game base set itself did not include these MVP cards.  Instead, each box set contained the entire 62 card base set plus two of six possible MVP cards.  There were seven All Star games in 1991-93 - two in 1991, three in 1992 and two in 1993 - but one player - Atsuya Furuta - was MVP of two of the games.

I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to do this but I decided a few years back that I wanted to get all six of these cards.  I had the two that I had gotten close to 25 years ago when I had originally bought my set and I think I got another one of them from Ryan somewhere along the line.  I got two more of them from COMC and then I found the last one (Katsumi Hirosawa) on Ebay a few months back when someone had broken up their box set.  So here's all six cards:

1994 BBM All Stars #E1

1994 BBM All Stars #E2

1994 BBM All Stars #E3

1994 BBM All Stars #E4

1994 BBM All Stars #E5

1994 BBM All Stars #E6

One kind of interesting thing to note is that neither Hirosawa nor Komada are in the base set as neither one made the 1994 All Star teams.  Additionally, by 1994 Komada was not longer a member of the Giants - he'd joined the Baystars as a free agent that year.

BBM repeated this treatment of All Star game MVPs the following year.  The 1995 All Star box set contained 63 cards - the 62 card base set and one of two insert cards for the 1994 All Star game MVPs.  I had gotten the Koji Akiyama card with the set I had bought way back when but I decided to pick up the other one - Glenn Braggs - a few months ago once I had completed the 1994 cards.  I was able to find it on Yahoo! Japan Auctions and bought it via ZenMarket.  I paid way to much for shipping for it and a couple other things though, and that was before shipping from Japan became prohibitively expensive.  But be that as it may, here are the two 1995 insert cards:

1995 BBM All Stars #E1

1995 BBM All Stars #E2

The 1995 set was the last time BBM put insert cards in their All Star sets for the previous year's MVP winners.  They would be part of the base set until 2010.  In 2010, BBM changed the release date of the set from July to August which allowed the set to reflect that year's All Star games.  So starting in 2010, the All Star set included the MVPs of that year's games (which means that the 2009 All Star game MVPs never got commemorated).  The change wasn't enough to save the sets, though, as BBM stopped doing them after 2012, along with their other annual box set - the Nippon Series set.  I don't miss the All Star game sets much but I do miss the Nippon Series sets.

2004 BBM Giants 70th Anniversary Magazine Cards

Now that I have all of them, I wanted to do a quick post showing the cards that were distributed in the mook (magazine/book) that BBM published in 2004 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Yomiuri Giants.  Each issue had an envelope embedded in it that contained two of the five possible cards - Eiji Sawamura, Tetsuharu Kawakami, Shigeo Nagashima, Sadaharu Oh and Tatsunori Hara.

I first became aware of these cards when I picked up the Sawamura card from Rob Fitts off of Ebay back in 2021.  Neither Rob or I knew where the card had come from but it didn't take too long before I not only figured out that it came from a magazine but I found a copy on Yahoo! Japan Auctions that I asked Ryan to pick up for me.  That issue contained the Oh and Hara cards.  I didn't hold out a whole lot of hope that I'd find the other two cards but I was pleasantly surprised.  I found the Kawakami card at SportsCard BITS in Nagoya last year and the Nagashima card on Yahoo! Japan Auctions (via Ryan) earlier this year.

I've shown all these cards in previous posts but I wanted to show them all in one post.  Here's the front and back of all five cards:

I didn't notice until I was doing this post that the Kawakami card has his signature on it.  Unfortunately it appears to be printed on the card and not a real autograph.  I don't think it's a parallel as the image of the card on the envelope embedded in the magazine shows the signature on Kawakami's card but no signatures on the other cards.  So I think all of the Kawakami cards have the facsimile signature on them.  I suspect that the image BBM used for the card had the signature on it.  I will say it's odd that they used that image since it's not like photos of Kawakami as a player are rare (unlike Sawamura).

Oldest BBM Set With An Active NPB Player - 2025 Edition

Time for my OTHER Opening Day tradition (and this one will continue) - which is the oldest BBM flagship set to have a currently active NPB player?

I got confirmation today that Hiroyuki Nakajima has officially retired.  He'd been hoping to catch on with another team after the Dragons released him at the end of last season but it was not to be.  This means that the final NPB player who appeared in the 2001 BBM set (the first one I ever collected) has now retired.  The oldest BBM flagship set with an active NPB player is now the 2002 set (or sets really as that was the first year that BBM issued their flagship set in two parts as the 1st and 2nd Versions).

Surprisingly, there's actually three active NPB players from the 2002 1st Version set - Takumi Kuriyama and Takeya Nakamura of the Lions and Masanori Ishikawa of the Swallows:

2002 BBM 1st Version #269

2002 BBM 1st Version #268

2002 BBM 1st Version #24 Facsimile Autograph Parallel

Ishikawa is the only one of the three who also appeared in the 2002 2nd Version set:

2002 BBM 2nd Version #442 Facsimile Autograph Parallel

I did not realize until I pulled these cards that I had the signature parallel for both of Ishikawa's rookie flagship cards.

I don't have enough Calbee cards to track this very well as I didn't start getting the complete sets until 2012 but since I have Ishikawa's 2002 Calbee card, I know that the 2002 Calbee set is the oldest one with an active NPB player in it:

2002 Calbee #093

You'll notice that I've been careful to say "active NPB player".  That's because there's an active player in Japan who was in a BBM set earlier than 2002 - Munenori Kawasaki is still playing for the Tochigi Golden Braves of the independent Baseball Challenge League.  At 43 years of age, Kawasaki is actually two years younger than Ishikawa but was drafted in 1999 so his first BBM card was in the 2000 set.

Should all three of these players retire after this season (which wouldn't be a huge surprise), the new "oldest set with an active NPB player" would slip three years to the Hideaki Wakui and the 2005 1st Version set.  If I considered MLB player as well, Yu Darvish would be there with Wakui.

Great Records

The Great Records insert set has been a staple of BBM's annual Fusion set since its debut in 2016.  Each year, this has been a 24 card set that features two players from each team reaching some sort of milestone that season.  The milestones celebrated include things like reaching certain round numbers for hits, home runs, games played, games pitched, innings pitched, strikeouts, wins and saves.

I first got the Great Records inserts with my Fusion set in 2019 and I've continued to do it ever since.  One of my goals on my trip to Japan last year was to pickup the cards I was missing from the 2016-18 Great Records sets and I did pretty well on that - getting all but two of the missing cards (and Ryan has since picked up the last two for me).

I was inputting the newly acquired cards into my database last summer when I noticed that certain players seemed to show up in this set every year.  I decided to do some counting and see which players appeared in the sets the most.  The guy with the most appearances was a little surprising - it's Fighters relief pitcher Naoki Miyanishi who's been in seven of the nine sets.  Now granted, this is the guy who kept Shohei Ohtani from winning a unanimous MVP award in 2016 so he's not nothing but it's still kind unexpected.  (Ohtani, BTW, never had a Great Record card.)  Takeya Nakamura of the Lions is second with six and Naoya Masuda of the Marines and Tetsuto Yamada of the Swallows are tied for third with five each.  There are 123 players (well, not all are players - more about that in a minute) who have had at least one card in the nine sets.  76 of those 123 only ever had one card.

The more I look into it, the more odd the selection of players is for these sets.  Not only did Ohtani never appear in the sets but neither did either of his Dodger teammates Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki.  Among the other Japanese MLB players, Seiya Suzuki only has two cards and Shota Imanaga and Masataka Yoshida only have one apiece.  Neither Kodai Senga nor Shintaro Fujinami ever had a "Great Record" card.  Munetaka Murakami has only had two.

Here's a list of all the Great Record cards.  I've sorted this list by player so you can easily see all the cards for a particular player.

One of the interesting things about listing the cards in this way is being able to track a player's progress in a particular category.  For example, Kazuma Okamoto has three Great Record cards - all for reaching certain amounts of home runs.  He hit his 100th home run in 2021, his 150th in 2022 and his 200th in 2023:

2022 BBM Fusion Great Records #GR06

2023 BBM Fusion Great Records #GR20

You've probably noticed that some of these cards are really shiny and don't scan well.  Some of them are more legible in person than others too.

I mentioned that not all the subjects of the cards are players.  There have been cards for two mascots - Tsubakuro of the Swallows and Mar-kun of the Marines - who each had appeared in 2000 games.  Marines PA announcer Emi Taniho has a card commemorating her 2000th game announced as well.  Here are those three cards:

2023 BBM Fusion Great Records #GR10

2022 BBM Fusion Great Records #GR16

I should mention that I also ran the stats on the milestones that were commemorated on the cards.  The most common one celebrated was "1000 Career Hits" which is on 16 different cards.  This is followed by "100 Career Home Runs" on 12 cards.  Tied for third with 11 appearances are "1000 Career Games Played" and "200 Career Home Runs" with "1500 Career hits" in fifth with ten.  There are 66 different milestones in all with just over half of them only appearing once.  (I used the actual text on the cards so you could nitpick that the two mascot milestones - "2000 Career Games Performanced" and "2000 Games Performed" - should be the same.)

Here's a card from each of the nine Great Record sets (including the sets that the above cards came from):
