The inaugural Premier 12 tournament got underway today with Team Japan taking on Team Korea in Sapporo. Japan won the game handily by a score of 5-0. Shohei Ohtani went six innings for the win, striking out 10 while only allowing two hits and two walks. Hayato Sakamoto hit a solo home run in the sixth, making him the first player to ever homer in a Premier 12 event (whether the Premier 12 becomes a quadrennial thing like the World Baseball Classic remains to be seen). Sakamoto also contributed a stellar defensive player by making a diving catch of a liner by Korean lead off hitter Yong-Kyu Lee in the eighth that probably saved a run.
