I've gotten a little concerned lately about Calbee. Their Series One set is normally released in late March but we're almost halfway through the month and there's been no announcement about the set yet. I started worrying that maybe Calbee wasn't going to do a 2025 set so Monday I decided to send them an email and ask about it.
I got a reply back from them relatively quickly. Series One is coming but it's going to be later than usual. The set will be released on May 5th with the checklist going live on their website on March 28th.
I think there's probably a couple factors in the delay. The first is that since I suspect Calbee is no longer doing three series each year, they figure there's no need to put the first set out in March. The second is that they currently have a soccer set on the market and I've heard from a couple people that the stores are full of that product. So I'm guessing they're waiting for those to have a chance to sell out before putting the baseball cards out.
It'll be interesting to see if the Series One set includes any rookies or players who changed teams in the off season. It's been a fair number of years since that happened. You'd think with six more weeks to play with, they'd be able to do it but it'll probably depend on whether they had laid out the set before they decided to delay it until May.
Regardless of what the set ends up looking like, I found it good to hear that Calbee will be doing baseball cards for their 53rd straight year - every year since 1973.
